Organizational Theory

The objective of the case study is to help develop the skills that will allow you to recognize organizational dysfunction and recommend remedies from your readings that can improve efficiency and effectiveness.

Research Question: How can organizational theories help to 1) explain why an organization functions the way it does, and 2) how can this understanding assist managers and employees of this organization?

Method: Select government or nonprofit organization/government agency/department you are familiar with because of direct exposure or media coverage. Collect information about the organization using evidence such as documentation, archival records, interviews, direct observations, participant-observation, news reports, etc. For a good case study you will want to use a variety of sources.

Written Deliverable: The paper must be a minimum of 10 pages, double-spaced, not including the cover page or reference list. Your paper will be graded on content (60%) as well as format (APA reference style, spelling, grammar, page formatting etc.) worth 40%. Rely on the course readings to guide your analysis and other sources focused on public sector organizational research. Cite all references and attach a list of references at the end of your paper.

Use the following sub-headings in your written report:
Introduction/Background: Describe the organization you will be studying, its history, its mission/purpose, its organizational structure
Theoretical Framework: Describe the organizational theory you will be using to analyze your organization; the fundamental concepts etc. Refer to you course readings for information on organization theory and, when you’ve chosen the theory you will be using, use additional sources to understand this theory beyond what you learning in class
Method: Describe how you collected your information about the organization. Possible sources of evidence: documentation, archival records, interviews, direct observations, participant-observation, news sources, etc.
Analysis: Review the evidence you collected give a summary that includes the (systemic/structural) patterns within the organization; consideration for alternative perspectives.
Conclusions: Write about what you found, how the evidence you found substantiates the theoretical framework you chose. Give a recommendation for future research.
