In a short paper of between 300 and 500 words, due in class next Thursday, February 11,
use utilitarian reasoning to assess Toyota’s behavior in the “unintended acceleration” scandal
during 2009 and 2010. What is utilitarian reasoning? Can Toyota use utilitarian reasoning similar
to the reasoning that Ford employed in connection with the Pinto? If Toyota were able to use
similar reasoning to that of Ford’s, would that give Toyota sufficient justification for what it did?
You should use the internet to get the basic facts about what Toyota did and what its
reasoning might be. One internet account can be found at: http://www.abc.net.au/news/

that you use. The relevant facts about the Pinto case can be found
in Michael Sandel’s book Justice.
