Paper instructions:
Each paper is expected to be, at minimum, 5-6 pages in length.
Papers will be evaluated on organization, grammar and spelling, clarity of thought, utilization of resources, and understanding of the material.
Students may choose one of the following prompts on which to write.
Option 1: Compare and contrast the roles of peace, law, and justice, respectively, in Hobbes and Locke. What is the purpose for peace, law, and justice in each thinker? What are the underlying presuppositions each thinker utilizes in his discussion of peace, law, and justice, respectively? Evaluate their claims.
Option 2: Discuss the Rawlsian “veil of ignorance†as a method to distribute justice. To address this question, you will have to discuss what, for Rawls, justice is, how the “veil of ignorance†relates to his conception of justice, and what the veil of ignorance is (including your evaluation of it). Finally, address whether the veil of ignorance is an adequate response to criticisms such as those leveled by Emma Goldman in “Minorities Versus Majorities.â€
