Short Papers – Multiple Readings
At other points in the semester we will be reading from a variety of authors for a single class. These
assignments ate
marked “Short Paper – Multiple Readings.” For these papers you should write about a common theme (or
lack thereof)
within the various works, and think about questions like the following: Why is the theme that the
authors explore
important? Do any of the authors do a better job than others in engaging the idea? Are there areas that
are important to
the theme that the authors ignore?
The above questions are one possible starting point, but need not be viewed as a template for your
papers. The main idea
for both types of short papers is to begin the process of exploring the relative clarity, importance,
and sophistication of the
arguments that the authors provide.
and the Topic is Political Parties
The Constitution makes no mention of political parties, yet they have been an important feature of
American politics practically from
the start. This week we will discuss the development of political parties in the U.S., and look at some
of the ways that parties behave
in the American political system.
