popularity of the piano

popularity of the piano
this is like an introduction:

Here is your discussions for the week. This forum focuses on the piano and all the piano music we have to listen to on our list this week. The question refers to the rise in popularity of the piano.

Remember to have copious amounts of information in your posts, so we can have a good discussion, and don’t forget to cite your sources.

this is the question:

The Nineteenth century saw many significant changes. One of the biggest changes for composers of that era was the rise of the modern piano. Explain what kind of impact this had on society, and what composers did to meet the challenge of writing for this new instrument. Use examples from our listening list or some of the examples I have posted in external links.

Think also about the impact of the industrial revolution and how it changed the piano. This too is important in how composers wrote for the piano. One last question– What about Stephen Foster and American music? Do you think the modern piano had an impact on the American songwriter?

Some of the songs:

Franz Schubert: Elfking CD 3 : 1-8
Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel: September at the River CD 2: 57-61
Stephen Foster: Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair CD 2: 62-63
Bedrich Smetana : The Moldau CD 3 : 23-30
