Jane and Henry have two young children. Adam (18 months) has been admitted to hospital with a broken arm. The parents state that the child rolled off their bed while they were making up his cot. The doctor treating the child uncovers several bruises on the child’s back. He suspects that these are non-accidental injuries and reports his concerns to the local authority. The local authority begin an initial assessment. The parents claim that they do not know the cause of the bruising. They explain that due to their busy work schedules they employ a babysitter, Emily, to look after the children between 3pm and 7pm every day. They claim that she must be aware of the bruises because he bathes and dresses the children for bed. Emily denies causing any harm to the children. She states that Henry has a short temper and that she believes he is occasionally abusive to Jane. During the course of the initial investigation, it becomes apparent that Henry and Jane are struggling to cope with the pressures of raising children and working full time. As a result of this they drink alcohol on a daily basis.
