With the following observation of the preschooler, make sure you compare your findings with the
text, films, lectures and handouts. Cite specific theories, examples and page numbers in the text.

numbered and answered in paragraph form.

a.    Motor:
1.    Does the child seem “at home” with his body, or are his movements stiff and unsure?
2.  Give definitions and specific examples of small and large motor skills andeye-handcoordination.
Support your answers with specific theories and citations from the text.

b.    Social:
1.    Is the child comfortable in the group and with other children?
2.    Is he/she a leader, follower, watcher, or all three at different times and situations? Give specific
examples.

c.    Emotional:
1.    What emotions does the child express and how does he express them?
2.    Is he able to regulate his emotions?  Give specific examples.
3.    How does the child interact with peers andadults?Define and discuss social referencing and different kinds of play.

d.    Language:
1.    How does the child communicate with his peers and with adults?  Is speech fluent, expressive and
articulate?  How much nonverbal language is used?  Give specific examples of telegraphic speech
and  over-regularization.
2.    Does he “play” with language (songs, chants, stories)?

e.    Cognitive:
1.    What kind of activities does child engage in? What kinds of toys and materials does he use?
2.    Do you observe exploration, creativity, mastery or frustration? Give specific examples.
3.    Do you observe any materials to facilitate fantasy play?  Describe.
4.    Does child’s play cover large areas or is it confined to small spaces?
5.     Do you observe any evidence that child has any special skills or abilities to solve problems on his own?

Evaluation and Personal Reaction:
Describe your reaction to the overall impression of the child in this setting. Is it a good “match”? (synchrony) Would you place a child of similar age in this setting?  What was the value of this observation for you?
Again, compare/contrast what you found in your observation to the text, class discussions, lectures and handouts.
