1.Demonstrate clarity about the public health problem/issue and the objective of the public policy
brief.
2.Quantify the problem – Be specific about problem’s scope and magnitude.
3.Describe the population affected by the problem.
4.Be specific about the nature of the problem – how does the problem affects the population, include
risk factor information if/when appropriate.
5.Consider including social and economic consequences of this public health problem/issue.
6.Consider your audience, what information does your audience need.
The Evidence
1.Evaluate the evidence that will best help you clearly express the massage(s) of the public health
policy brief. Include only data necessary for the argument(s) being raised in your brief.
2.Consider how the data should be presented.
3.Don’t forget to include qualitative evidence as well as quantitative when available and appropriate.
4.Consider when appropriate including graphs, tables or other appropriate visual aid. If you chose to
include this type of evidence included as an addendum and not include it in the word/page count.
Describe potential policy solutions
1.Review the evidence in your topic in relation to laws, regulations, recommendation, interventions or
public health and/or other programs implemented to address the particular public health problem/issue.
2.Present evidence on policy solutions that target the public health issue/problem addressed. The
policy brief can select one or more policy solutions from many. Highlight why this policy solution(s)
are most suitable for the problem.
Make recommendation for policy action
1.Take this opportunity to make a case in support of one or more of the policy solutions presented.
