Interviewing an Elder
This is an opportunity to get to know an older person (65+, the older the better) by interviewing her/him. You are encouraged to interview a relative if possible.
You should plan on 45-60 minutes for the interview and try to conduct the interview in-person rather than over the phone. Please cover at least four of the following questions and add your own questions if you want:
What was a typical summer day for you when you were 10 or 11?
What are some inventions or discoveries that have changed your home life?
What was your biggest challenge in life and how did you overcome it?
How did segregation and discrimination affect you?
How do you feel about the younger generation and their use of technology?
How did the Vietnam War (or another war) affect you?
How do you feel about being your current age?
You will write a 3-5 page double-spaced paper:
1. Describe your interview:
when and where the interview took place
who you interviewed, their relationship to you, and their age (full names not needed)
length of the interview
how receptive the elder was to the idea of being interviewed
2. Report on the answers to the questions
3. Identify:
any high points
any low points
what you learned
what surprised you.
4. Analyze: How do some of the responses relate to content from the Quadagno “Aging and the Life Course” textbook?
5. Conclude: What have you learned about aging from this interview?
You will be graded on how well you address ALL the criteria above.
