PSY 101 — Summer 2014— Paper 1 Use an example from your own life, from the life of someone you know, or from your imagination that illustrates the existence of real life conditioning. Your example can be either classical or operant conditioning. Your paper must include the following elements: 1. Explain the background for your conditioning example (i.e., briefly set up your example). (1 pt) 2. Identify whether your example is classical or operant conditioning. Why? What distinguishes it from the other? (3 pts) 3. Identify four critical elements in your example (6 pts) a. If Classical, label and explain the unconditioned stimulus (UCS), conditioned stimulus (CS), unconditioned response (UCR), and conditioned response (CR). b. If Operant, label and explain the target behavior, whether it is reinforcement or punishment, whether the reinforcement/punishment is positive or negative, and the nature of the specific reinforcement schedule. In discussing the schedule, you need to identify which of the four specific schedules it is, not just whether it is continuous or partial. Note that if you use a punishment example, you still must discuss the schedule. All papers must observe the following formatting requirements a) 12-point normal sized font (e.g, Times, Times New Roman) b) Double-spaced c) 1-inch margins on all sides d) Minimum of 1 page e) Maximum of 2 pages f) Complete sentences and appropriate grammar g) Free of spelling and other typographical errors h) Concepts described in own words (quoting is very rarely necessary) i) Include your name, UB Person Number, and email address You may lose points for failure to meet formatting requirements.
