Qualitative Research Method

PART 1: Interview (1,000 words)
Your task is to interview a person that you do not know well about her/his working history. Before the interview, you should brief the person about the purpose and topic of the interview and get the person to sign a consent form. You should also ask permission, and if granted, record the interview. The interview should be about 30 minutes long, paying attention to key events in her/his working life. This includes:
• Decision points/critical incidents leading to change;
• Highs and lows of her/his working life, successes and frustrations;
• Development of her/his work identity and how this has changed;
• Anticipations and aspirations for the future.

Your write up must start with a reflection on the interview process. This should include details of how you identified and contacted your interviewee and in what ways this shaped your approach to the interview. The reflection also needs to describe how you built a rapport with your interviewee before the interview and how this may have helped to maximise the productivity of the interaction. Then detail and reflect on your interviewing strategy (e.g. how you opened and developed conversation) and support this with quotes from your interview to illustrate what worked well and what did not. Following this, write up your analysis of the interview by referring to the transcript and reflect on any ethical issues that you need to consider in respects to the interview.
In completing part 1, you must ensure you address the following:
• Submit the interview transcript as an appendix.
• Fullyanonymise the interview transcript and the write up.
• Embed, cite and reference key texts on interview methods (such as Flick on theories underpinning qualitative research; Mayers on interview structure, preparation and analysis; Bryman and Bell on interview analysis; and Alvesson on reflexivity).
• Make sure that your interviewee signs two copies of the ethics consent form before the interview (the form is provided at the end of this document). The interviewee keeps one copy of the form, but you MUST submit the second copy SEPARATELY FROM YOUR ASSIGNMENT. It will be filed. Please do not submit it as a part of your assignment as this will identify you to the marker and breach the anonymity criterion and could disqualify your assignment from the assessment.
