QUALITY IMPROVEMENT (QI)
Definition: Use data to monitor the outcomes of care processes and use improvement methods to design and test changes to continuously improve the quality and safety of health care systems. (QSEN Institute 2013)

 

Purpose: Quality Improvement occurs on a continual basis and allows for patients to receive the best care that the health care system can provide.  The purpose of this assignment is to identify an action, intervention, or method that you believe has the potential to have a negative effect on the patient or health care organization.  Support your statement of problem with an evidenced based article.  Develop a plan that may be utilized to improve the system, and present this information to your faculty and peers.  This assignment will assist the student in the development of student learning outcomes #2 Nursing Judgment, #3 Evidenced-Based Practice, and # 5 Quality and Safety

 

Learner Outcomes:  Upon completion of this assignment the learner will:

  1. Identify a safety and quality issue in the health care environment
  2. Write a 1 page summary which includes elements of quality and safety
  3. Present the findings to the faculty and peers.

 

Assignment:

  1. Identify a quality or safety issue in a health care setting.
  2. Explain why this is a safety and quality issue.
  3. After identification of this issue, write a one page summary and incorporate safety enhancing technology, national patient safety goals/JCAHO regulations, or evidenced-based practice.
