Pol Sci 400 Human Security

Paper 2 Due April 2 125 pts

ln chapters 1-4 of Planet of Slums, Mike Davis discusses the problem of slums in multiple regions of the

world. He identifies several causes of the spread of slums, and discusses several ways in which living in

slums threatens individual human security and how governments are challenged by their growth.

For this paper, discuss the primary causes of and social, economic, and political forces contributing to

the spread and growth of slums as identified by Davis. What is driving this growth and spread of slums?

Identify different ways in which well-being and security are threatened or harmed by slums and slum

life. What are the consequences, threats, and insecurities created by slums and what are the specific

examples Davis uses that you find most important to understanding the consequences of slums? How

do these threats and insecurities fit into the components of human security?

Be as specific as you can in finding particular examples noted by Davis in the first 4 chapters of his book.

Try to find 3 or 4.

Finally, chose 1 of your examples and write briefly about how you think either social identity and group

conflict, image theory, or social capital might help us explain why this example of human insecurity

might is harmful and destabilizing to a community, state, region or the international system. Try to take

the example and analyze it with the lens of one of the theories we’ve discussed in class and see how it

helps us look at the problem in a more complete way.

For example, Davis discusses the decline of vacant land on the periphery of cities, and that these lands

are being controlled legally or illegally by powerful local or international interests. What are some

implications of this that you can see in terms of social capital? Or in social identity? Or images? What do

these theories tell us about this kind of a dynamic and what do the theories tell me might be happening

as a result of this dynamic?

Davis identifies several issues like this throughout the first 4 chapters of his book. After identifying a few,

choose one and explore it with a given theory.
