Reading Assignment #1: “Values and Perceptions of Invertebrates”

Grading criteria:
Stephen R. Kellert evaluates the value of insects to society and what causes shape the perception of insects by the general public in

the U.S. Write an essay discussing the main ideas present in the text. Please follow the guiding questions when writing your essay

(guiding questions are available on D2L). We expect also a conclusion paragraph that synthesizes the main ideas of the paper tying

together introduction, results and conclusions. A successful essay is one that incorporates answers to the guiding questions and meets

the criteria specified in the rubric (see table below).
Please notice: this is a 2-round essay, i.e., you will submit your essay by the due date (January 25) and we will grade it according to

the rubric (see table below). This first version of your essay is worth 15 points. You will receive a feedback from us on February 5

and on February 22nd you will submit a second, revised version of your essay that takes into consideration the changes that we

suggested in your first version. The second version is worth 30 points.

You get this grade if your essay shows me that you
13-15 Included answers to guiding questionswithin the essay; you show you have read and understood the text; conclusion paragraph

successfully ties together the main ideas of the article; minor misconceptions might be present
11-13 Understood most of the text, some ideas are superficial; some answers are missing; minor misconceptions
8-10 Understood only parts of the text (less than half); some confusion about the key points; lacking an interpretation of the text
Less than 8 Did not understand the text; did not follow guiding questions;lots of misconceptions

Which basic attitudes towards invertebrates (Table 1) apply to you? Select all that are applicable.

Which of the motivations for aversion apply to you?

Is it reasonable to lump all invertebrates (or insects) together when evaluating attitudes? Should attitudes toward different types of

insects be considered separately?

Kellert implies that, considering the many values and benefits offered by invertebrates/insects, there may be a cost to not protecting

those threatened by factors in our world today. Evaluate his suggestions for shifting attitudes towards insects to the more positive

side.
