Reading Guide Questions for Module 1.Instructions Reading Guide Questions are meant to show that you have carefully read the assigned readings and understand what you have read. These questions are more “content” orientated and objective, asking you to sum up what the author has written about the given topic. A good response is one that correctly answers the question, and then explains and elaborates on it to some extent. After giving the answer, you should expand on it, explain the context, the repercussions of what happened, the influences which led to this event, etc. Brief and unsubstantial responses will not receive a good grade.

NOTE WELL: Some students may be tempted to try to find shortcuts to these questions without bothering to read the text. Please know that these responses are based on our text and assigned readings. You are not to copy and paste material from history websites. You may certainly do private research to supplement what you are reading in our text, but it must be supplemental, not a substitution for our reading. I will be looking for your ability to understand the point of view of the authors of our text and elaborate on it. If you want to go beyond that, that is good. But you need to work with our text first.

Always write in complete and grammatically correct sentences. Please spell check and proof read before submitting your responses. For those who need help with writing, recourse to the SU’s tutorial aids is highly encouraged. This work should be submitted by Thursday evening, 11:45 PM.

In these first two chapters of our text, the authors help us to transition from the decade of the 1950s to that of the 60s – the focus of our study. What was the state of the union in the final years of the 50s? What were the nation’s concerns and fears? What were Americans feeling good and hopeful about? What was happening domestically and internationally?

As the authors transition into the 60s, many of the decade’s pressing issues and challenges are revealed, things we will need to discuss in depth as the course unfolds. We begin with the Cold War and civil rights.
