Reimbursement Dilemmas

Read the Hermann and Herlihy article, “Legal and Ethical Implications of Refusing to Counsel Homosexual Couples,” from Journal of Counseling and Development, volume 84, issue 4. Read Weekly Case 5 Transcript For this discussion, refer to this week’s case study, the unit readings, and the ethics codes. When a client’s mental health insurance benefits do not cover treatment for the diagnosis of the presenting issue, he or she may be unable to afford treatment. Suppose you find the client to have an alternate diagnosis that would be covered by the insurance. Is it ever ethically appropriate to frame the diagnosis differently, in order to access the client’s insurance benefits? Would you submit a different diagnosis code for billing to the insurance company, in order to ensure the client’s expenses for the therapeutic services are covered? Why or why not? Justify your positions with support from the unit readings, the ethical codes, and other relevant resources. Cite your references in APA format. Response Guidelines Respond to the posts of at least two of your peers. You are encouraged to ask questions for clarification, respectfully debate points, and present additional information, as applicable. To demonstrate that you have completed your studies for this unit, include at least one relevant reference from the readings. Cite your reference(s) using APA format. Make sure that your responses are also in accordance with any of the established faculty expectations.
