Religion in Schools

Paper instructions:
Religion in Schools in New Zealand:
Your essay should not merely describe a religious community’s general beliefs or
practices, though you may choose to consider how a specific group differs from the more widespread form of the religion concerned or how its beliefs have changed in recent times. At the same time, if a religious group maintains its traditional beliefs and practices with minimal adaptation in this country, that is a legitimate part of the New Zealand religious environment to investigate (requiring nuance and subtlety). The following are suggestions only, and they include some overlaps. Feel free to adapt one or to propose something different. Your research question need not be based on one of the topics in the study guide or any of the groups introduced in the guide, but it must
deal with an aspect of religion (or irreligion) in contemporary New Zealand. Comparison with an overseas context is also quite acceptable, for example by reading an overseas study and comparing the findings with the situation in New Zealand.

This essay must include an approx. 1000word research plan with bibliography. Your bibliography should list 10 significant items of varied kinds (books, articles,
websites, interviews, religious publications, etc.) in an appropriate referencing format. Under each item, write a paragraph (about 80-100 words) critically discussing its
significance for your research topic. Your bibliography will be assessed on the quality and suitability of the items listed (for answering your research question) and on the cogency of your comments on them. The usual rules of formatting and written academic language apply.
