Assignment Brief

Background

Through play, children learn many skills, such as how to interact with other people, and different ways of thinking, long before they

start school or nursery. Children learn in a wide variety of complex ways, by observation and imitation, by rote, through reinforcement

and by exploration, trial and error, all of which may or may not involve play. Children learn by playing in places where they feel safe,

respected and loved. Children’s play is their work (Moyles, 2003).

Self-regulation is a skill that we learn throughout life. The foundations are set in the early years. Self-regulation develops when caring

adults respond sensitively to a child. A secure attachment promotes good self-regulation. This assignment will give you an opportunity to

develop your understanding of the value of play and the links between play and learning – also if play can provide any kind of excellence

in learning.

Introduction
This is your chance to demonstrate you understand what you are writing about. You should include some background to the idea of play (LO1)
Your introduction will often give an indication of the conclusion to the report.

Main body/findings
This is the main part of your report, you need to use logical sections with clear headings. You should include images and examples from

your setting to support your ideas. You must ensure that you link the concepts to theory, and do not just create a photo album of the

setting.

Conclusion
Your conclusion should bring together your findings with deductions based on the facts described in your main body. Do not include any new

material here.

Recommendations
You may want to include recommendations based upon your findings. These should follow on logically from your conclusion and be based on

theoretical concepts. Any recommendations should demonstrate how the setting’s play provision could be improved by your recommendations. A

recognition of limitations needs to be made. Recommendations may be written as bullet points with a short paragraph of justification.

References
This is a list giving the full details of all the sources to which you have made reference within your text.

Appendices
You may choose to include photos / charts / tables within your work. Some of these may be included within the main body of the text, or

you may choose to place them in the appendix. Each appendix should be referred to in your text, you cannot include something as an

appendix if it is not discussed in the main body.
