Each student is responsible for providing a research paper to provide more in-depth analysis on a selected topic relevant to crime and intelligence analysis within a specific working environment. The paper must be 3,000 words (+/- 10 percent) in length and be submitted in electronic format. The topic chosen for the research paper must expand on what has been covered during the course. The paper must draw upon independent research and personal reflections in addition to the assigned course readings. It is expected that you will make extensive references to theoretical literature throughout the paper. For example, if you make a statement, ensure that is supported through documented research.
Topics
You may write your research paper on one of the following selected topics:
• Compile a portfolio of some of the key concepts from this program of study and provide illustrative examples of how the concepts may be interrelated.
• Take a theory about the causes of crime from academic literature and discuss its strengths and weaknesses in light of commentary by other academics.
• Identify an official report on crime that you think may be relevant to the work of criminal intelligence analysts. Discuss which crime theory may serve to explain why the offence(s) occurred and identify any elements that may have assisted with the tactical and/or strategic analysis to further any intelligence and/or enforcement strategies.
• Behavioural science has been accused of promising a great deal but delivering little of practical value. Critically evaluate the various approaches to behavioural science and suggest ways in which this discipline may be of interest and value to analysts.
• Articulate your understanding of the symbiotic relationship that exists between crime and intelligence, and between tactical and strategic analysis within the framework of law enforcement.
• Law enforcement agencies around the world have undergone several paradigm shifts in the manner in which they deliver services. Read recent academic commentary on service delivery and outline the strengths and weaknesses of the policing models discussed and under what conditions each may be used.
