According to Max Weber, the development of capitalism in Western Europe was facilitated by the rise of Protestantism. Please discuss the relationship between the
Protestant Ethic, individualism, and the rise of capitalism in Western Europe.
Contrast the central value of individualism, which predominates in the U.S. and parts of Europe, with collectivism that is prevalent in some Asian countries, such
as Korea, Japan, Taiwan and China.
Discuss cultural variation in norms and provide at least one example of how norms differ across cultures.

In terms of socialization, how important is the family for society and individuals and why? Describe the 1950s model of the ‘traditional American family’. What
social and economic factors contributed to the decline of the traditional American nuclear family?
How does the U.S. compare to the rest of the world in terms of its emphasis on individuality in the context of family and marriage? What effects does an emphasis
on individuality and passionate love have on family structure in the U.S.?
