This assignment is aimed at providing opportunities to examine practices and issues related to the teaching of young children who are English

language learners and children with special needs. You will also have an opportunity to select multicultural children’s books addressing a

variety of diversity issues. There are two parts to this assignment.
Part 1: Research on Policies addressing services to culturally diverse children ELL Children and Special Needs Children
Critically read and react to the following documents: • Florida’s META Consent Decree (available at http://www.fldoe.org/aala/cdpage2.asp ) or

to your state policy statement or guidelines on the teaching of English language learners • Position statement Responding to cultural and

Reflect on the readings and comment about their implications on: • Views and definition of English language learners (ELL)

Responsibilities in the planning and teaching of culturally diverse young English language learners and children with special needs •

Considerations on the teaching practices that would best support children’s needs as: English language learners. Comment on the

characteristics of the classroom environment that in your view would best meet the ELL child’s needs. Children with special needs. Share

comments on classroom accommodations that would best meet their needs • Current issues and challenges in the teaching of young ELL children •

Issues and challenges working with and special needs children
Use the reading as well as Chapter 8 from your textbook as references to support your comments
Part 2: Log of multicultural books and resources:
• Considering the implications from the position statement, prepare a log of childappropriate children’s books for a specific age group

(very young preschoolers, preschoolers, kindergartners, primary age). Based on the target group that you selected, choose and read at least

ten multicultural children’s books related to a specific diversity aspect. Identify as well topic related multicultural teaching resources

that would support responsive experiences.
Some suggested diversity aspects include the following:
Cultural traditions
• Linguistic differences
• Gender issues
• Immigration
• Age
• Exceptionalities
• Beliefs
• Social class differences
You could also use some of the suggested titles in your textbook or those listed in this syllabus. For each title, prepare a short response.
