In August of 2012 a large amount of maple syrup was stolen from Quebec’s strategic sryup reserve. Read the article and watch the short video at

One might wonder why there is such a thing as a strategic reserve of maple syrup:
http://m.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2012/09/why-does-canada-have-a-strategic-maple-syrup-reserve/261869/
Why is the existence of the reserve more important for a product that is a major export (like syrup in Canada) than it would be for a product that is sold locally and not exported?
The case was solved in December of 2012 and explained in this New York Times article :
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/20/business/arrests-made-in-maple-syrup-theft-from-quebec-warehouse.html?pagewanted=2&_r=0
From the NYT article:
“Canada’s supply management systems for other agricultural products, like dairy and poultry, have been protested unsuccessfully for decades by the United States and other countries in trade negotiations.
What role does such a management system play for a country that controls a major portion of a particular market?
Why have other countries protested against Canada’s practice? What are the negative effects of such a system?
