We have talked and read about capitalism in the last two weeks. We have covered a fair amount of material.

Discuss the rise of capitalism in Europe before the 20th century, especially causes and consequences. Hand in the assignment when you come to class

on Tuesday.

The aim of the assignment is to help you develop comprehension and writing skills. This is the required format:

(1) Complete the assignment in 800 to 1000 words. These are hard limits. Points will be deducted if your paper falls outside this range. Specify the

final number of words (excluding personal and class information) at the end of the paper.

(2) Every paragraph MUST begin with a thesis statement, that is, a signpost of the ideas that are developed in the paragraph. An example of a thesis

statement is: ?Individuals confronted new economic challenges that forced them to interact with one another in new ways.? The rest of the paragraph

would elaborate the challenges and how they altered social interaction.

(3) No need to draw on other sources. Use lectures, selections from the textbook, and passages from Anthony Giddens?s Capitalism and Modern Social

Theory (which I will uploaded to Smartsite on Wednesday afternoon). If you use other sources, limit usage to 100 words. Excessive use of other

sources will lead to significant point deduction.

(4) Simple citation is sufficient (e.g. Robbins, Culture of Capitalism, p. 5; Weber, Protestant Ethic, p. 66)
