ASSIGNMENT
Part 1: SARA Project Synopsis
Weighting
The SARA Project Synopsis (Part 1) is worth 10% of your cumulative mark in the course. The Main SARAProject (Part 2) is worth 15% of your course grade. Together, these two major assignments are worth 25% of your course grade.
Project Overview
Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to provide you with the opportunity to demonstrate a working knowledge of the SARA model and how it can be applied to a realistic environment. You are also expected to demonstrate an appreciation of the need for police officers to take a structured approach to problem solving.
This project is designed to test your ability to apply concepts learned in Unit 3. Specifically, it requires you to focus on the components of the SARA model, how the Crime Triangle works (Routine Activities Theory), and how to focus on an outcome-based approach.
Project Framework
You are required to work on a problem-solving initiative of your own choice, conduct applicable research using the SARA model, and produce a written document or an equivalent multimedia presentation outlining the appropriate means by which police could reduce the scope or size of the problem in the community. Be sure to demonstrate an understanding of how the pieces of the SARA model fit together. By demonstrating your understanding, you will need to do more than just solve a problem you have identified.
Instructions
For this assignment, you may work alone or with one other student in the course. If you choose to work with another student, you must inform your tutor in advance. You, either alone or with another student, will be expected to submit a synopsis of the project to your tutor in advance of completing Part 2 of the assignment. The research methodology you use in this assignment must include the SARA model as outlined in the course.
In keeping with the teaching philosophy of this course, which “strives to help you acquire confidence in your ability to be creative, to work in a fluid and rapidly changing environment, and adapt to new conditions” (see Teaching Philosophy and Style in the Course Information section), the guidelines for the main project are flexible. The project proposal should be written in outline format, with a detailed description under each heading and should be approximately 250 to 500 words in length. The final project document can be written in either a traditional essay-style format of approximately 2000 to 4000 words. Or, you may compile a Microsoft PowerPoint file of 20 to 25 slides, with background material added to the slides in the Notes Section. Or, you may do a combination of both. You are encouraged to explore other multimedia tools, such as podcasts, digital images, and even video in combination (or not) with text (a shorter written document) if you so choose. The important thing is to consult with your tutor and to agree on the mode of delivery for the main project and its scope.

Business Process: An Outcome-based Model
One of the dominant strengths of problem-oriented policing is its emphasis on the intended outcome of policing rather than on procedural issues. Whereas management practices tend to focus on inputs and outputs, such as the number of officers deployed and the number of arrests made in a given period of time, a problem-oriented approach is concerned with the outcome of a given police strategy. Did the enforcement action make a positive impact in the community? Are the police officers being deployed in a manner that is helping to reduce fear of crime? Do people feel safer?
