Answer these questions:

School based mental health services are in the forefront of the nation’s debate about mental health services in our schools in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy (12/14/12). This assignment allows you an opportunity to research what past federal and privately funded research has been done and the recommendations that have been made about school based mental health services. Your paper should address the following questions (please use subheadings for each question):

1. What types of mental health problems exist for children and teens in schools?
2. How are schools meeting their needs of our school age children?
3. What populations of children and teens are most at risk?
4. Do these federal reports address culturally appropriate services? If so, what do they recommend?
5. Where does school based mental health services funding come from? How are needs determined? How are needs prioritized?
6. Who regulates school mental health services?
7. How are school mental health programs evaluated?
8. How is your school responding to the mental health needs of their students? Which professionals in your school provide mental health services?
9. Is your school personnel trained in threat assessment techniques? How are they prepared to keep students safe at school? The National Rifle Association has called for an armed guard at every school; what is your opinion about this recommendation?
10. What recommendations do you have for your school? How would you go about initiating your recommendations?
