Season 1 of The Wire

Law

In New Mexico, an air force base discharges up to 750,000 gallons a day from its wastewater treatment plant. For more than a decade, the facility has treated its waste

and then used the treated water to irrigate a nearby golf course and discharged into a nearby lake (Simple Lake) through a pipe system. Simple Lake routinely dries up

significantly every year during the dry summers in New Mexico. Simple Lake does not feed into any stream, river or tributary.  A water sample from the discharge pipe

into Simple Lake found that the water contains selenium, oils and greases, chloride, sulfate, nitrogen, and phosphorus. If left unchecked, these chemicals could pose a

threat to human health and local ecosystems. There is some argument that these contaminants can eventually work their way into the ground and eventually hit the water

table that supplies the neighboring city water supply.
