semiotic analysis

Drawing on particular theoretical perspectives and concepts of your choice, offer an analysis of the following media text/phenomena (Time Magazine Cover: Are You Mom Enough? | May 21, 2012)

a textual analysis is not the same as a semiotic analysis!

Rough guide to structuring your textual analysis:

1. A brief introduction stating the aims of the piece of work, including a description of the text you will be analysing.

2. A section where you develop this description by interpreting the text in relation to one or two of the main ideas taught in the module, pointing to arguments and ideas in relevant academic material (books, journal, etc.)

3. A concluding section where you assess how the text uses specific ideas, assumption, stereotypes, or perhaps challenges them, in order to depict one or two of the main ideas taught in the module. remember you will need to support your suggestions here.

4. remember that texts are things we make meaning from and no text is the only accurate, true unbiased, realistic representation of any part of the world. As we learn from Alan McKee, ‘there are always alternative representations that are equally accurate, true, unbiased and realistic’ (2003:29)

5.avoid statements that simplify or generalise about a whole social group or culture or practice.

6. remember every culture and subculture has different ways of making sense of the world, which is why you are analysing he text and try to deconstruct the myths and or stereotypes behind what we commonly accept as truths. which particular culture is represented or depicted in the chosen text as well as addressed in the audience? which historical moment or era? what are the dominant ideas in the text? how are they constructed and represented in a realistic manner or as truths?
