Paper instructions:
. Papers are to follow a scholarly format and arguments must be supported with research from
scholarly communication journals and books. Papers are to follow the APA 6th edition style. Your
textbooks must be included asa source. Students must incorporate at least ten scholarly articles in
addition to the textbooks (i.e., not from newspapers, the Web, etc.)
that include the theory of interest and include them in the paper. Papers should be 10-12 pages
in length, not including title page, abstract, and references. Papers should: (1) Provide a thesis statement
about why or why not the theory chosen is a “good” theory; (2) identify and describe the theory as World View I
or World View II, as appropriate; (3) identify and describe the central tenets of the theory; (4) identify and
describe the functions of a “good” theory and whether the theory you’ve chosen meets those functions;
Once topics have
been chosen, they cannot be changed. Your paper should follow the following format:
a. Title page (see item #2 below)
b. Abstract (see item #2 below)
c. Introductory paragraph(s) that arouse(s) interest in the topic with the reader.
d. A statement of the problem or thesis statement (examples to be given in class).
e. A review of the literature on your topic. This is the main portion of your paper. It is here
that you provide research evidence for the thesis statement you offered early in the paper.
f. Concluding paragraph(s)
g. References (see item #2 below)

journals/books include: Communication Monographs, Human Communication Research,
Communication Yearbook, Journal of Communication, Communication Quarterly, Western
Journal of Communication, Communication Theory, Southern Journal of Communication,
Communication Studies, Sex Roles, Journal of Marriage and Family, Journal of Personality and
Social Psychology, Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, and Personal Relationships.
Use of magazines or non-academic sources is not acceptable. You may use books/book chapters if
the books are scholarly books. If you have found a source that you’d like to use, please feel free to
pass it by me first if it does not appear on the list above.
