ASSIGNMENT:

For this assignment, you will choose a topic and construct a report based on that topic. Chapter 9 Reporting Information of the Norton Field Guide textbook has information on reports as well as some models. Report-based writing is concerned with providing information about a specific topic, usually information that is in some way useful (or could be useful). Be careful however. Reports are not concerned with providing advice or persuading a reader to do something. Instead, reports are designed to properly inform a reader about a topic and that is primarily all that they do.

The ENG 111 Research Guide on Moodle has a variety of resources for you and it will serve as your primary means of finding your sources. Please take a look at it and use it to find some credible articles, journals, eBooks, and other resources that will assist you with this assignment.  We will also be closely working with librarians so that all of your research needs are addressed. You must use between 3-5 sources for this assignment. One of those sources must be a credible print source and the other remaining sources must come from the research databases. **That means that you will not be using Google, Yahoo, Bing, or any other search engine or random website to find your information. Instead, you will be relying on our library’s print resources and online research databases (accessible through the ENG 111 Research Guide on Moodle).

When deciding how to organize information, writers often use many of the techniques discussed in the STRATEGIES chapters, so do take some time to look them over.

For those of you that have the They Say I Say book, refer to the readings in the syllabus for helpful hints with completing this essay.

The essay should be 4-5 pages of actual text, double-spaced, 12 pt. Times New Roman font, with at least 1100 words within the essay itself. Format the essay in MLA format. Remember that you’ll need to use 3-5 sources and make sure those sources fit the guidelines mentioned above.

Note: You may NOT write about any topic that is covered extensively in the textbook or is covered in class/on the syllabus. Those topics serve to show you examples of reports so that you have an idea of what a report looks like. You should be able to use that to develop your own topic, one that is of interest to you. If you are unsure if your topic is suitable, please consult the instructor.

PROCESS: There are three steps in our essay process.

Use Exploring Ideas to help you come up with topics for your paper. Your topic can be something you’re interested in or even a topic you are interested in learning more about (See A GUIDE TO WRITING REPORTS, and GENERATING IDEAS AND TEXT in the REPORTING INFORMATION chapter of your textbook for further help.)
Prepare a draft of your essay. As you prepare a draft, keep in mind that you’ll need to find quality sources and need to understand your topic before you begin writing about it. How will you organize your paragraphs so that your report flows? (See DRAFTING and GETTING RESPONSE AND REVISING in your textbook for further help.)
Using the critiques given on your paper in the Peer Review Workshop and instructor conference, make necessary revisions. You can use tutoring services to work on grammar and basic writing issues and ask the instructor any assignment-specific questions. Participation in the workshop is vital. If a student does not participate in the peer-review workshop or submit a completed draft for peer-review (or for the instructor conference), points will be deducted from the final score for that essay.
