New Yorkers follow fashion trends the sane way dogs follow their owners. Certainly, it is not an easy task to keep up with fashion trends because they change in a blink of an eye. In that regard, the Museum of Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) opened a new exhibition called “Exposed: A History of Lingerie”. It is located at 227 West 27th Street, and it will be on view until November 15, 2014. The exhibition provides information about the cultural influences that lingerie has had through the years. It portrays all the different types of garments and how they have changed through time. It also traces all the intimates that have emerged since the 18th century to the present.
The steward of the exhibition Colleen Hill exposes the fashion changes of color, patterns, and textiles throughout the years. The exhibition has numerous collections which are set in a chronological order – Exposed. The History of Lingerie embraces the two types of lingerie; the soft and the hard one. The pieces vary from corsets, busters, bras, nightgowns, panties, and robes.
The curators have structured the exhibition in a simple way that demonstrates how past cultures impact the undergarments. If you glance at the trends across a decade, it is a complete expression of what has been happening socially, politically, and culturally (for instance, in pop culture). This influenced all fashion undergarments of those moments, inspiring fashion designers to build very exotic pieces, hence the creation of the different types of lingerie.
