social construction of deviance and social control

Outline and critically discuss the ways in which your studies have developed your
understanding of the inter-relationship between ‘deviance’ and social control
Assessment Brief
Assessment Weighting: 100% Coursework
Learning outcomes to be assessed: 1-4
Question: Outline and critically discuss the ways in which your studies have developed your
understanding of the inter-relationship between ‘deviance’ and social control
Task: You are required to write an essay whereby you reflect upon the ways in which the module
content has widened your knowledge of any of the topics to which you have been introduced to. This
essay will be assessing learning outcomes 1-4.
Guidance: You will contribute to your essay in stages or ‘patches’ and therefore it will be assembled
gradually during the course of the module. Your assessment is structured in this way in order to:
 avoid the last minute rush of having to write the entire essay at the end of the teaching, when
time is short;
 enable you to give each other early constructive feedback as to how clearly you presented your
ideas and how they might perhaps be developed;
 enable you to write about all aspects of the module content (instead of having to select just a
few aspects for a specific essay topic).
Keep a journal throughout the duration of this module: In preparation for the assessment it is a
good idea to record your views on the topics for discussion each week prior to the lectures and
seminars. Try to think about where your own ideas have come from and why you hold your particular
views. Prior to any reading and before the lecture you should record:
 What do you think the topic is about?
 How do you feel about the topic?
After the lecture, reading and seminar it is a good idea to record the following:
 How did your own view compare with the perspectives we have considered on the module?
 Did any of your views change as a result of discussion and further reading?
 Try to identify the reasons why your views changed/stayed the same.
You should submit each patch on Moodle on the dates set. If you fail to submit these patches, you will
not be able to access the valuable formative feedback that is provided in your seminars by your peers
and seminar tutor – do not put yourself at a disadvantage – submit your patches on time! These
patch tasks will form the basis of your final essay.
Before you submit your final version of the assignment you will need to revisit (edit and revise) the
ideas you have presented in your patches and add a discussion about what you have gained from your
study of ‘deviance’ and social control as a whole.
Word Count: 2,500 words
Word Limits: Students will be penalised if they go 10% over or 10% under word limit of their
assignment. The penalty will be 1% for every 100 words (up to a maximum of 10%). For example, for a
2,000 word assignment: If a student submits 1, 800 or 2,200 – no penalty is applied. If a student
submits less than 1,800 or more than 2,200 a penalty would be applied. Eg. If the word count was
1,700 then 1% would be deducted from the final mark. If it was 750 then the maximum of 10% would be
deducted

Control
100% Coursework
First assessment hand in date 28th April 2016, Midday
Publication of provisional mark with feedback 7th June 2016 – please remember that grades
are provisional until after the July exam board.
Re-assessment hand in date 8th August 2016, Midday
Publication of confirmed mark 22nd August 2016
Late Submissions: Work submitted before the final deadline will receive the full mark available. Late
work will be subject to penalties. Work submitted up to 2 hours late will have the mark reduced by 10%.
If that would take the final mark below the pass mark, the pass mark will be awarded. If work is
submitted after the deadline up to 5 working days it will be marked and you will be notified of the full
mark but the mark recorded on the Student Record System will be capped at the bare pass mark. This
can have serious consequences for your final classification. Any work submitted after 5 working days
after the deadline will not be marked and will be recorded as ‘Fail through non-submission’. If you have
an extension for exceptional circumstances this will be taken into account and you will receive the full
grade. Information regarding extenuating circumstances can be found here:
https://icity.bcu.ac.uk/Student-Services/Complaints-and-Appeals/Extenuating-Circumstances-Procedure
Assessment Regulations: Under SUAR 5 regulations you only have TWO assessment attempts (a
first attempt and a resit attempt).
At the first attempt, the full range of marks are available.
At the resit attempt the mark is capped. The maximum mark that can be achieved is 40%.
In the eventuality that you need to resit this module, or for those students who defer their
coursework, support will be provided by your project supervisor at an appropriate time prior to
submission. During the resit period, you have up until the deadline to submit your work. There
is no grace period of five days for resit coursework. Work submitted after the deadline of
Monday 8th August, Midday will be classed as a fail through non submission.
Submitting Your Assignment
All assignments are submitted electronically. Upload your work using the submission point indicated on
the Extended Research Project Moodle page. This is a really useful link if you are not sure what to do:
http://moodle.bcu.ac.uk/course/view.php?id=5060&section=2
There will be approximately a two week window of opportunity to submit from when the submission
point opens to the final deadline.
It is your responsibility to ensure that the work you submit is in the appropriate format as per the
assignment instructions. The coversheet must be readable in MSWord. Submitting work in an
unreadable format will result in a non-submission. If you use software other than MSWord to edit your
work you must convert the file back to an MSWord compatible file format.
Technical difficulties that fall outside of BCU systems will not be considered grounds for a claim for
extenuating circumstances (for example, loss of internet, slow upload speed, computer crash losing
data etc.). However, if tutors believe that a technical problem at BCU has caused problems with the
submission, they will check with CICT. In such cases, module leaders will immediately set students
mind at rest by adding 24hrs to the submission final deadline and you will be informed of that via the
module news forum. Information regarding exceptional circumstances and extensions can be found
here:https://icity.bcu.ac.uk/student-services/Complaints-andAppeals/Exceptional-Circumstances-EC
Note that marking tutors and module leaders cannot grant extensions.
You can upload your work to the submission point, download it, delete it or change it as often as you
like up until the time you hit the submit button. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR FINAL SUBMISSION AS A
DRAFT
When submitting the work you will be required to accept the following statement:
The work I am submitting in this assignment is my own work and has not been submitted for
assessment in another/previous module. This submission complies with BCU policies regarding
plagiarism, cheating and collusion. I acknowledge and agree that the assessor of this assignment may,
for the purpose of assessing this assignment: reproduce this assignment and provide a copy to another
academic staff member and retain a copy of this work for potential plagiarism checks. I have retained a
copy of this assignment for my own records. I will retain a copy of the notification of receipt of this
assignment.
Once you click the ‘Submit’ button, the work is considered as a final, unalterable submission EVEN IF
THE FINAL DEADLINE HAS NOT YET PASSED. Tutors will not unlock a piece of work after it has
been submitted. Tutors may start marking on submitted work before the deadline.
If you upload your work to the submission point, but forget to press the submit button, this WILL be
counted as a submission once the final deadline passes. The tutor will lock the work (effectively turning
it from ‘draft’ to ‘submitted’) soon after the deadline. This effectively means that you have accepted the
submission statement above. If you edit your submission, including pressing ‘Submit’ after the deadline
but before the module leader locks the work, it WILL be considered a LATE submission.
REMEMBER – You cannot request that your work be released from the submission once the
submission deadline has passed OR once you have pressed the ‘submit’ button.
