Introduction

There are many roles that the media serve in the society. One of such roles include serving the masses with information. It also helps to shape the view about the deepest values in the world which we perceive as good or bad.  Social media is a powerful tool that can be used to shape the perception and communicate with various people across the globe. Social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram just to name just but a few are some of the powerful social sites in the modern society. This paper aims to point out the negative impact of social media on specific gender stereotypes and offers some of the possible solutions.

Research Questions and Hypothesis

The following research questions will be used to guide the research process:

1.    How is the role of gender being changed and challenged?

2.    Which gender has more opportunities for social media advertising?

Hypothesis

H1: Social media is full of stereotypes related to gender

H2: Social Media is not full of stereotypes related to gender

Literature Review

Stereotypes in the media are usually expected given the fact that the entertainment and advertising industries need a wide audience as possible to understand their information is a simple manner as possible. Social media has set out some characteristics that have been attributed to the men and women respectively. This then creates some form of dictatorship. Due to the perception and the stereotyping of women in the society, they have been perceived to be the weaker sex. Over the years, women have been used in many advertising forms, be it on the online platform or on other forms of advertising and entertainment. Certain parts of the woman’s body have been targeted and used in these advertisements. This therefore makes the women in the society to be weak in the society. This is mainly due to the fact that they have been depicted to be people who do not react when they are targeted unfairly.

According to Collins (2011), the modern women therefore have more opportunities for social media advertising and they have been affected in a negative manner. This is due to the fact that social media advertising has created an ideal image to which the woman must fit into. They therefore tend to work towards achieving this ideal image and as a result, become victims of social media stereotypes

Solution

There is need to come up with other innovative ways of advertising and create a form of awareness that is going to sensitize people on the various forms of stereotyping of genders. Social media is a very powerful tool that can either affect the society in a negative or positive manner. Therefore, it should be used to promote harmony and peace in the society where people are united.

Conclusion.

From the discussion above, it is evident that the hypothesis one holds true. Social media is full of stereotypes related to gender. The research questions have been answered since it was found that women in the modern society have more opportunities for social media advertising. Innovations in technology are still evolving and these innovations should be used in a positive manner so that we can have a unified society with a common goal. The internet has made the world to be a small community and therefore it should be used for a greater good.
