You are to write a reflective essay on aspects of your secondary socialisation. Secondary socialisation is a lifelong process of learning that involves a number of different agents. Agents of socialisation refer to the people, groups or institutions that teach us how to participate in society. They are often closely involved in aspects of our identity, and can shape our worldview.
The following is a list of potential agents: family school clubs/social groups cultural background work media government religion peer groups
Select three agents out of the above list and write a reflective essay that analyses the influence that these three agents currently have on your socialisation. In this essay, you will be analysing how the three agents you select contribute to your current sense of self, your beliefs, your values and your worldviews. Your essay will also look at how your current socialisation may have inherent blind spots. You will need to relate these ideas to the sociological literature.
Your essay is to address the following: Include an introductory paragraph that clearly introduces the three agents you would like to analyse. If you select a large agent such as ‘government’ or ‘cultural background’ – clearly define which part of this agent you will be discussing in this essay. For example – with government you might choose democracy; with cultural background, you might choose ‘close ties with family’. Define the key sociological terms used. Give a clear analysis of how the chosen agents contribute to your socialisation.
