sociological imagination

.

Chapter 1 discusses the “sociological imagination”. This idea was developed by C. Wright Mills and he was suggesting that every individual is unique – you are shaped primarily by two things: (1) Personal Biography: the distinctive aspects of your individual life (family, friends, religious affiliation, hobbies, etc.) and (2) Time in History: the time, place, and events you were born into (a 21st century American). This theoretical concept plays a tremendous role in who you become. Mills sought to identify the individual’s relationship with society.

What personal factors have had the greatest impact on life? What are some of the characteristics of the time period in which someone lives?
Do these things affect how people live?

What makes people’s life different from someone who lived on the other side of the world 500 years ago?
