Specialized Courts

Over the past 20 plus years, there has been a greater trend toward establishing specialized courts, such as drug courts,
domestic violence courts, mental health courts, and homeless/veteran courts. Please chronicle the history of one such court.
What alleged deficiencies were there in the traditional court system that the specialized court sought to remedy? How has the
experiment fared according to those who study such courts? Are there different models in different jurisdictions, and if so
highlight some of the differences. Have there been changes in appellate and/or statutory law that have impacted how the
court’s judicial process operates? Are there changes to their procedure or the pertinent law that you believe should be made?
