Writing a Cause and Effect Essay is about showing the logical relationship between actions and consequences. We use this process to analyze historical events, solve crimes, or even explain why we are fighting with a partner in a relationship. The skills previously learned— such as supporting the thesis with concrete details and examples—will be needed in writing this essay. Remember to explain the logical connection between each element of cause and effect; do not assume that your readers see the same causal relationship that you do. Do not be afraid to use the words “cause” and “effect” in your essay. Remember that you need to support your position using concrete examples from your own observations and experience.
1. Organizations such as PETA or UNICEF frequently place celebrities in their ads or commercials. What are the positive or negative effects of a public figure becoming the face of political and/or social justice issues? In order to develop your thesis, think about either the attention celebrities bring to causes or the implications that come with celebrities telling the public what to care about.
2. Honesty is usually perceived as a positive quality, however, is it possible to be too honest? Although honesty is undoubtedly a good value, sometimes too much honesty can be considered harsh, and many people see no problem with lying to be kind to someone. Can too much honesty in a relationship have negative consequences or should someone always be honest? In order to develop your thesis, think about either the effect of emphasizing honesty or the impact of too much honesty.
3. Many students now have smart phones that allow them to surf the web, receive email, and send multimedia messages from any place. Some educators have embraced mobile technology to stay in touch with students and enhance the classroom. Still, other educators find that phones in the classroom are a distraction to students. Make a claim regarding whether or not mobile technology has had a negative or positive effect on the classroom and the higher education experience.

As with all your essays, you will need to turn in all previous drafts, prewriting and the appropriate rubric for this assignment, which can be found on page 226 of Bridging the Gap. Pages 215-225 of your textbook may be used for pre-writing and working on your rough draft(s).
