Speech #5:  The Special Occasion Speech

Purpose:  To pay tribute to a Person, a Group of People, an Institution, or an Idea.  This is a Commemorative Speech, one of the most common forms of a Special Occasion Speech.

Assignment Description:  Commemorative speeches are speeches of praise or celebration.  Your aim in this speech is to pay tribute to a person, a group of people, an institution, or an idea.  Your

subject may be historical or contemporary, famous or obscure.  The person being praised may be a family member, someone who was/is influential in your life, a public figure you admire, etc.

You may choose to recognize a group of people whom you admire or an institution or organization that has contributed to your life, or a dominant idea or belief in your life.

This speech focuses particularly on the use of language and encourages you to use it imaginatively.

Points:  50

Time Requirements:  3-4 minutes

Audience requirements:  You need at least 6 people, ages 16 and up (no pets or mannequins) to serve as your audience, including your video camera operator.  Having less than the required 6

audience members will result in failing the assignment.

Delivery Method:  This speech should be written out and delivered from manuscript (word-for-word).  Practice reading from your manuscript until you are thoroughly familiar with it.  Having a

speech written out word-for-word is NOT an excuse to avoid or severely limit eye contact.  Be familiar enough with the material so that you can make frequent eye contact with your audience.

Also avoid a “reader’s vocal quality” by delivering the speech in a natural and conversational style.  Dynamic vocal variety is a major plus for this type of speech delivery.

Manuscript Guidelines:  The manuscript should be typed with triple-spacing and use only one side of the paper.  Each page should end with a complete thought.  Do not break sentences on one

page and continue them on the next.  The manuscript may be written in any format you prefer.  Mark up your manuscript with notations for eye contact, voice inflections, pronunciation cues,

etc.  You may use a highlighter if you wish.

Speaking Outline:  The word-for-word manuscript version of this speech IS your speaking outline.  An exact copy of the manuscript from which you deliver the speech should be submitted to your

instructor by the due date.

Organization:  Special occasion speeches don’t typically have a specific purpose statement or follow an outline format.  This does NOT mean, however, that you can just ramble.  Your speech

should flow well and in a logical fashion.  Begin with an introduction.  Paragraphs in your manuscript can coincide with “main points” (qualities, attributes, traits, etc.) you wish to make about the

subject of your speech.  End with a creative conclusion.

Preparation Outline:  Not required for this speech.

Visual Aids:  Optional.  You are not required to use a visual aid for this speech but they can sometimes add a personal touch or make the speech more memorable.

Sources:  Not required for this speech.  If you do choose to quote someone or state factual information, be sure to cite the source.

To Be Submitted by Due Date:  Your Speech #5 Video should be uploaded using Speech Video Capture in Connect.  Your manuscript speaking outline should follow written work guidelines and be
