Assessment Details

For a company of your choice you are being asked to:-

? Identify and effectively utilise the appropriate tools and theories to evaluate the existing and potential strategies of an individual business with particular emphasis on its financial strategy

? Identify and evaluate how a business has put its strategy together, how it is financed and what its financial performance is.

? Pinpoint areas for development and how those would be financed.

? Make recommendations on its future strategy and how it would be financed

Students are to submit their choice of company to the tutor by week 2 of the module. Students should ensure that the company which they want to study has accessible information – this may mean that the choice is limited to a PLC where key materials, such as annual reports, are published for investors via their website. The report should include

• A concise introduction defining strategy and financial strategy, introducing the company and clearly identifying the aim and objectives of the report.

• A critical evaluation of the company’ external competitive environment with particular emphasis on the importance of the external financial environment both globally and nationally.

• A critical evaluation of the company’s internal environment with particular emphasis on its financial performance both as a company and its individual portfolio of products or strategic business units.

• A critical review of the strategic options open to the organization and how they would be financed.

• Synthesis of information to provide recommendations for the future strategic choice and direction of the organization including its finances.

Particular instructions to students:

This is a formal business report of no more than 5,000 words therefore:-

• There should be a cover page on the report

• The work should be spell and grammar checked

• Font should be set to Calibri, Times Roman or Aerial, size 12, font

• Double line spacing should be used

• Headings in size 13

• Use Word © heading styles to ensure a consistent table of contents

• Use Harvard style of referencing

• Use Endnote © or other formal referencing tool to ensure consistent and accurate Harvard Referencing

• Maximum 5,000 words

• The word count does NOT include the executive summary, bibliography or appendices

• Submissions should be a bound report, not in plastic wallets

• Students are advised to read the marking criteria to ensure they have met the requirements

• Further guidance on formal business report style is:

o Executive summary – one page of A4, single line spacing in size 12 font

o Contents page that uses Word © tools to support development, showing

? Sections and Subsections

? Figures

? Tables

? Appendices

? Page numbers

• Students must work independently to develop the report.Words in excess of 5,000 will be marked but will be penalized by 10% of the overall marks awarded.
