Student post feedback – DUE TODAY – 7/11/2016

Please reply to the following student’s post:According to the Project Management Institute (2013), “A project is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result.” (p. 3). The Project Management Institute (2013) goes on to list some key characteristic of a project; it “has a definite beginning and end”, “a project creates a unique product, service, or result”, has no limits of the number of individuals that can work on a project. It is important to note that a project is not the same as a business project. A business process is “Ongoing – the same process is repeated over and over again.” while a project is temporary (Martin & Tate, 2001). A business process “produces the same output each time the process is run” and “has predefined work assignments” (Martin & Tate, 2001). Comparatively, a project “produces a unique output” and “has no predefined work assignments” (Martin & Tate, 2001). Martin and Tate (2001) further distinguish that when new or updated work needs to take place in a business setting a project is required; everything else, the remaining and continuous work, is accomplished through a business process. Attempting to classify and operate everything as a project is a bad management practice (Martin & Tate, 2001).I accept this definition of a project and business process. Due to this, I believe that AMBA 640 is a business process and not a project. AMBA 640 has “predefined work assignments”; the 10-week course has planned assignments that include this very discussion activity. AMBA 640 “produces the same output each time the process is run”; each section of AMBA 640 produces a subset of students who comprehend the material presented each quarter and proceed with the MBA program. While it is true that students are unique, and the set of students who pass AMBA 640 are unique – this is not enough to make it a project. The business process of AMBA 640 accommodates this variation from one quarter to the next by providing various tools to accommodate variation in things like learning style in order to produce the same output; students who understand the material. For these reasons I believe AMBA 640 is a business process. It is important to be able to tell the difference between projects and business processes so that resources aren’t mismanaged. Running a project can take significant resources and time in the form of project managers, review, and planning so this is an important distinction.  ReferencesMartin, P. K., & Tate, K.
