The principle investigator will identify potential participants in medical/surgical intensive care unit(MSICU) at King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Saudi Arabia, Jeddah based on their length of staying in MSICU, all patients who will be staying in MSICU for more than or equal to one full night will be approached to participate in the study. Potential participants will be screened for inclusion and exclusion criteria. Comatose and sedated patients who scores 4 or 5 on Richmond Agitation Sedation Scale (RASS), inability to complete the questionnaire e.g., did not speak or understand Arabic, or with major communication barrier e.g., unable to point the answer) will be excluded from the study. The study will be conducted between June until December 2015 at King Faisal Hospital. Written consent will be given to thepatients and/or their families for their participation. Patients’ participation is voluntarily; therefore participants will receive no remuneration for their participation.in order to encourage the patients to participate in the study I will explain to them the effect of sleep quality in patients quality of life, provide them with a brochure on sleep deprivation and it consequence on patients health, your participation will contribute to the community, I will inform them that the questionnaire is easy and short it takes less than 5 minutes to be filled out, we will provide you a free copy of the articles once its published, will inform them that they will not be bothered by re-contact, it is only once. Furthermore, administering in person questionnaire and ask the participant to complete it at the same time maximized the number of completed questionnaire, increase response rate, and allowing respondents to ask questions. All MSICU nurses in that hospital will receiveda full day education session on sleep quality as well as training session on RCSQ items, how to fill out the questionnaire, and how to administer it to the critically ill patients provided by the principle investigator. After all MSICU nurses have been trained, MSICU nurses will ask the eligible patients who meet the inclusion criteria to complete the RCSQ (self-administered questionnaire). The principle investigator and research teams will collect the questionnaire and score it and enter it id the system for later ondata analysis.
