ARGUMENT TO PERSUADE: WRITING A PROPOSAL ARGUMENT
• You will be writing a Proposal Argument for your FINAL RESEARCH PAPER.

• This is an argument in which the AIM is to persuade. An argument to persuade is much like arguing to convince, but it goes one step further – it tries to make people take some form of ACTION!

• You should know how your opponent thinks! Imagine being a general in the army and not knowing howthe enemy thinks; that’s a formula for disaster. A good soldier is victorious by being able to OUT-THINK the enemy. This is also what a good lawyer needs to do.

One of the biggest differences between CONVINCE and PERSUADE is a matter of emphasis! Persuade is convincing PLUS:
• The reader has to trust the writer’s character (ETHOS); you must appeal to your audience’s sense of ethics and fair play.
• You must also appeal to the audience’s emotions (reason does not always work with some people).
• You need to demonstrate good style and organization (good writing) or you will lose your audience’s trust.

HOWEVER —– With this final essay of persuasion, you will add an additional element at the end of your paper – a separate page listing recommendations or solutions to the issue. You can do this in a paragraph or two – or bulleted statements.
