Project 4: Individual Argumentation and Persuasion
The purpose of an argument is to persuade or convince the reader that the position the writer takes is correct. This differs from other types of essays where the goal is to present information or to show how something is similar to or different from something else. The persuasive essay is all about changing someone’s mind. Some topics are better suited to this type of essay, topics that can be logically argued with facts, examples, expert opinions or logical reasoning. Still, they must be a topic on which someone can take an opposing viewpoint. You may be tempted to choose a matter of preference or faith, but these do not make good topics for the argument essay since it is highly unlikely the you will be able to alter the beliefs of the reader, so stay away from issues of faith or preference, like ‘heaven is or isn’t real’ (since you cannot prove it,) and gravitate towards questions you can support, such as ‘students should be able to choose their own college courses.’ It is very important that he supports his opinion with objective proof – facts, statistics, typical examples, and opinions of established experts – and not just statements of his own beliefs and opinions.
Research
You will use four sources for this project. You will use at least one source that establishes facts relevant to your argument, at least one source that provides an example relevant to your argument, and you will use at least one source containing an expert opinion on your topic. These sources can be from websites, journal or magazine articles, or from books. Sacred texts and Wikipedia articles will not be acceptable sources for this project. Interview sources must be approved by your instructor.
Form
MLA Format will be observed. 4-6 pages, typed, double-spaced with 1” margins all around in Times New Roman, 12-point font and a works cited page at the end.
Criteria for Evaluation
Your project will be evaluated based on the following:
? A good title should announce the thesis in the title.
? The opening paragraph should attract the reader’s interest, prepare the reader’s mind by giving some idea of the topic through the thesis statement, define a key term, and include an argumentative thesis that reveals the author’s main claim.
? The body of the essay should:
o Provide an exposition (your reasons supporting your main claim)
o Include a rebuttal
? Avoid a conclusion that merely restates the essay. Suggest the larger implications or questions arising from your argument, but don’t go outside the realm of the essay.
? The argument should have transitions so that the reader can move easily from the beginning of a paragraph to the end and from one paragraph to the next.
? Your persona should come across as informed, intelligent, benevolent, and honest.
? Your argument should show audience awareness.
? Avoid sexist language.
? Do you strategically incorporate four secondary sources?
? Do you have a works cited page that follows MLA citation guidelines?
? Is your argument copyedited well?
