Essay Prompt
Imagine that you were a teacher who began your teaching career in a rural Northeastern town in 1830 and ended your career teaching in a Northeastern city in 1860. Describe the changes in the larger societal context and in education reform over the thirty years. What impact did centralization of education have on you, your students, and the communities you served? How did the experiences of your southern colleagues differ during this same period? Based on your experiences, does centralization or local control produce a more democratic form of education?
