1. Margaret Thatcher’s career can be divided into three stages: 1) The years before she became an MP; 2) Her early years as MP; and 3) The period from 1961-1969 when she was in the government. For each period identify:
a) The two powers she relied on most in building her career.
b) The powers that she acquired.
Be sure to describe the case evidence that supports your contentions that she used or acquired particular powers. Note that this analysis requires that you understand the definitions of personal and positional power in Professor Hill’s paper and my book.
2. In 1990 Margaret Thatcher was forced by her own party to resign as Prime Minister. In looking back over the case, what behaviors do you think led to her downfall and her inability to maintain the allegiance of her ministers and other members of her party. Consider the currencies that she typically used as well as the habitual behaviors she used in her interactions with others. Remember that currencies are something that you give to others in order to acquire their support.
