INSTRUCTIONS:
? In your essay, you should focus on a single myth, a work of art or monument with mythological decoration (or a group of monuments) and address its socio-cultural, political and art historical context. This may include comparison with other works of art, or representations of the myth in other media or other historical periods. You can also place the emphasis on aspects of social/cultural context and ritual (e.g., Myth and Roman domestic decoration, Roman funerary art, Greek symposium, Greek theatre, mythological charades in the amphitheatre).
? The paper should show evidence of critical reading, and should construct an argument based on primary, secondary, and theoretical sources. In our context, the category of ?primary sources? includes ancient monuments (e.g., buildings, works of art, or any archaeological evidence); but it can also refer to ancient authors in translation (if literary sources are available for your topic). ?Secondary sources? (or ?secondary literature?) includes scholarly books and articles (including the textbook). ?Theoretical sources? refers to conceptual approaches to ancient art and archaeology (in our case, this partially overlaps with the category of ?secondary literature? or ?secondary sources?)
? Your paper should be based on no fewer than four (4) works of secondary (scholarly) literature, listed in your bibliography. It is very important that you reference correctly the sources you use. Use the?Chicago Manual of Style for citation
? The most relevant literature for your essay will be available in the short term loan section of Robarts library, and a list of these books will be posted on the course website. You are, of course, invited to include other books and articles from the university libraries, available either on-line or in print.

? Please exercise caution when using Internet resources. Generally speaking, websites maintained by universities, academic institutions or museums are more reliable than others. Books and scholarly articles remain your best (and often your only) choice.
? Illustrations: You should provide illustrations if the works of art or architecture you discuss in your paper are not illustrated in the textbook.
? Illustrations (and your bibliography) are of course not included in the page limit for your essay (5 pages)
