The Future of Sustainability
Hand-in Assignment
Destination Planning
Ecotourism is defined as “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people” (TIES, 1990). Ecotourism

is sometimes considered to be a contradiction in terms. After all, the tourist still has to use natural resources to travel to the destination.
According to the International Ecotourism Society, ecotourism is about uniting conservation, communities, and sustainable travel. This means those who implement

and participate in ecotourism activities should adhere to the following ecotourism planning principles (TIES, 2012):
Minimize impact.
Build environmental and cultural awareness and respect.
Provide positive experiences for both visitors and hosts.
Provide direct financial benefits for conservation.
Provide financial benefits and empowerment for local people.
Raise sensitivity to host countries’ political, environmental, and social climate.
Discuss what sustainability planning process you would use to develop an ecotourism attraction that would draw in tourists and enhance competitiveness, while at

the same time benefitting the community and conserving the environment. Please use examples as appropriate, and cite sources as needed.
This assignment should follow a structured approach, should be prepared and presented as an essay of no more than 1,500–2,000 words.
Please be sure that the final submission adheres to APA formatting standards.
