Assignment #2: Writing about the City
Your second assignment will be to choose from a list of approved novels that incorporate
diversity and the city as part of the story. You must write a 6-8 page scholarly essay that
explores the city, neighborhoods as a character in relation to the narrative. Please note
this is not a book review or a summary assignment. You must use class lectures,
discussion, theories and concepts as a framework for analyzing the role of urban space as
a character in relation to the larger story. What role do neighborhoods, cities, urban
spaces play in the larger story? Are there cultural assumptions and understandings about
urban space? Would the story be understood differently if not set in the context of the
particular city? Is there a sense of place expressed by the main characters? What set of
social relations do you identify that are essential for understanding the narrative? The
second assignment is due Apr 16th in class.
