Materials/Sources to be used

• Element 1: You may use any source you wish in your evaluation of the Sample Essay – either Course Materials (those available in the Unit II folder on Angel for this course, plus the Kingdom of this World novel by Alejo Carpentier), or material you have found on the Web. If you use Web material, you MUST give full citations (inc. URLs) for ALL the internet sources you use.
• WIKIPEDIA IS NOT AN ACCEPTABLE INTERNET SOURCE FOR ACADEMIC WORK! Anyone who uses Wikipedia will receive a failing grade for the Assignment.
• Element 2: For this section, you can ONLY use Course Materials (those found in the Unit II folder on Angel, plus the Carpentier novel)
• Element 3: You should base your assessment ONLY upon the materials/reasoning you have already cited in Elements 1 and 2.
• You may use whatever citation format you are most familiar and comfortable with – footnotes, endnotes, or in-text citations.
Grading Criteria

Your paper will be graded based according to the following criteria:

• The strength and persuasiveness of your argument in support of your points;
• Your use of course materials ONLY for Element 2 of the Assignment;
• The elegance and ‘readability’ of your prose;
• Correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, and syntax;
• Complete and correct citation of all materials used, Web or Course related;
• Failure to cite Web materials correctly will be treated as plagiarism and treated accordingly. You may receive a failing grade in the Assignment, or for the Course overall. See pages 5-6 of the Syllabus for more details;
• Your adherence to the above-listed format guidelines – including the length of the assignment (over-running the page limits will be penalized).

Hints and Tips for your Assignment
• Element 1 of your assessment should be restricted purely to an evaluation of the quality of the argument of the Sample Paper – what things it did well and what things it did badly (or failed to do altogether). As such, any comments on how well (or badly…) written you think the Sample Paper is should NOT be included in Element 1, but can be included in your grade justification in Element 3.
• Equally, while Element 1 should include some evaluation of what the Sample Paper did badly, or failed to cover, you should NOT include any suggestions for which course materials it should have included in Element 1. Discussion of this should feature in Element 2 alone. Restrict your comments in Element 1 to a discussion of the ideas and arguments that the Sample Paper makes, and leave what additional sources it should have used to Element 2.
• For Element 2, when you note which additional course materials the Sample Paper should have included to make it stronger, you do not need to give an overview of the suggested materials (as I will already be aware of its content). Instead, restrict your comments to noting how the arguments contained in the suggested source would have improved the Sample Paper. In other words, don’t just say what your suggested source said, but argue how including it would have made the Sample Paper stronger.
• Finally, for an exercise like this – intended to test your analytical and critical thinking skills – it would be pointless to ask you to evaluate a perfect paper, as that would leave you nothing to comment on. Thus, the Sample Paper is not perfect and the purpose of the exercise is for you to identify the problems with it.
