Costume Designer: Your paper must address all of the following criteria based on your collaboration with your fellow Production Team members for the Hypothetical Production. Use the criteria below to present a cohesive paper. It is important that you not only bring your personal vision to the project and presentation, but that it demonstrates the collaborative decisions you made as a Production Team.
Perform an Assessment of Costumes based on the information provided in the script to help inform how the Hypothetical Production will be conducted. In designing costumes for a play a costume designer must think about all of the following:
• Describe all the references in the play that refer to costumes in the stage directions.
• Describe all the references in the play the characters make in their dialogue regarding articles of clothing.
• Are there costume changes? If so how many costumes will you need?
• Is there symbolism represented in the costumes? Should there be?
• Is the play set in modern times or is it a period piece?
• Are specific color choices necessary to the costumes of each character? Should there be? (Example: would it help to signify the relationship between characters?)
• What about the characters helps to identify the kind of clothing each character might wear?
• What should the costumes look like; what would be appropriate for the characters to wear? (Think about the characters’ jobs, social status, personalities, or their mood)
• How do your ideas fit into the Production Team’s Unified Vision?
• Briefly share your findings from your paper with the class during THE PRESENTATION.
• Draw or find pictures of costumes that you think would be appropriate for each character. If you have specific materials in mind from what the costumes should be made of bring in small swatches or samples of fabric for THE PRESENTATION.
