Each author uses irony to depict unexpected twists of fate. Based on your reading and analysis of the two tales, which author uses irony more effectively, Petronius in “The Widow of Ephesus” or Boccaccio in “Federigo and Giovanna”? Identify what makes each story ironic and make the comparison.
Compare how irony is woven into each story, and explain the different roles it plays in demonstrating a premise, a moral or a lesson to the reader. Apply this approach in explaining the results of your analysis and comparison.
How to set up your opening paragraph:
After your introductory lead-in establishes general parameters of the topic and identifies titles and authors, lay out the different way each author uses irony in his tale, and define what makes it ironic.
In order to state a thesis which responds to the essay assignment prompt when it asks whether Petronius or Boccaccio uses irony more effectively, your thesis will be the point you arrive at as a result of comparing how the authors use irony in their tales.
To define the terms of your comparison, set out (in a couple of sentences each) how each author does this. Then compare the two. Your thesis statement will be based on the findings generated by making this comparison.
Deal with each author’s use of irony in separate sentences and clusters of sentences. Then compare the two. It is this comparison that generates your thesis statement in direct response to the essay assignment prompt. Proofread your paragraph and do a sentence-level revision before posting.
State the conclusion that you extract from making this extended comparison in direct response to the assignment prompt. This is the thesis of your essay composition. Now define the terms of your comparison and state a thesis that is connected to them.
To back up this main point of your composition, the first two body paragraphs should discuss how each author uses irony in the telling of his story.
The third body paragraph should draw a point-by-point comparison of the two which explains the reasoning behind your evaluation of which author is more effective in his use of elements of irony.
Tie up loose ends in your closing paragraph, resolve any questions left unanswered and restate the conclusion to which your reasoning process has led you.
